Who We Are

About Western Lodge

Helping men rebuild their lives

Western Lodge provides safe, supported accommodation for single men aged 30 and over who have experienced homelessness and need help to regain stability.

Our purpose is to create an environment in which every resident is treated with dignity and respect. Through individual support, encouragement and a strong sense of community, we help men address the challenges they face, rebuild their confidence and prepare for a more independent future.

We believe that no one should be defined by homelessness or by the circumstances that brought them to us. Every resident has strengths, ambitions and the potential to move forward.

A safe place, practical support and the opportunity to begin again.

A Place to Belong

Western Lodge has been designed to provide residents with both privacy and a sense of community.

Each man has his own self-contained accommodation, offering a secure and personal space in which to regain stability. Residents can also spend time together in welcoming communal areas, including the lounge, garden and summer houses.

Shared meals, celebrations and everyday conversations all help create a supportive atmosphere where residents can feel valued, build relationships and gradually regain confidence.

Western Lodge is more than a building. It is a place where people can feel safe, be themselves and begin looking towards the future.

A Space of Your Own

Private accommodation offers residents security, dignity and independence.

Time Together

Communal areas provide relaxed spaces where residents can talk, socialise and support one another.

Room to Breathe

The garden and summer houses offer peaceful places to relax and spend time away from the pressures of daily life.

A Shared Community

Meals, activities and celebrations help residents build connections and feel part of something.

Over 200 Years of Support

1819
The First Refuge Opens

Following a winter of severe hardship in London, a group of businesspeople and bankers appealed for public support. Within hours, premises were secured and the Society’s first refuge opened in London Wall.

1856
Charles Dickens Visits

Charles Dickens visited the Society’s Houseless Poor Asylum in Whitecross Street. Deeply affected by what he witnessed, he later wrote about the refuge and its residents in his journal, Household Words.

1925
Western Lodge Is Established

The Society moved into a Georgian house on Clapham Common called Western Lodge. Adapted to accommodate 30 homeless men, the building became the charity’s home and gave the service the name it retains today.

2012
A New Home in Tooting Bec

Western Lodge moved to its newly renovated property in Tooting Bec. Ten self-contained rooms provided residents with greater privacy while retaining the supportive community at the heart of the organisation.

Today
Continuing Our Work

More than two centuries after the Society opened its first refuge, Western Lodge continues to provide safety, dignity and practical support to men rebuilding their lives and preparing for greater independence.

Jackie

Working in the field of homelessness around the county, with different client groups over the past 45 years; help me to recognise that men are amongst the most marginalized in our society, as it is expected that they should be able to cope with life’s many challenges such as abuse, domestic violence, bereavement, job loss, trauma, addiction and poor physical/mental health. The reality is we ALL struggle with these events INCLUDING men. I feel it has been my privilege to walk along side so many on the road to recovery while working at Western Lodge.

Rodney

I have worked at Western Lodge for the past 15 years, supporting a wide range of clients with diverse needs. While the role can be challenging at times, I find it extremely rewarding to make a positive difference in people’s lives. I support clients with their day-to-day activities and help them manage their mental health, enabling them to develop confidence, independence, and essential life skills. The most fulfilling aspect of my work is seeing clients progress and ultimately move on to live independent and fulfilling lives.

“I arrived at Western Lodge after many years of sofa surfing and homelessness. Upon my initial arrival at the Lodge I was very nervous and apprehensive about staying in a homeless project, so it was a great comfort to be welcomed with such warmth and understanding not only from the staff but from all the existing residents as well. Western Lodge is a peaceful clean and well-run hostel and I am grateful for the caring and professional staff who helped me to improve my life whilst at Western Lodge.”
