Western Lodge has been operating as a hostel for homeless men since 1923 through The Society for the Relief of the Homeless Poor, which began its work almost two hundred years ago. The Society established its work in 1819 as a response to the needs of the street homeless in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars and economic depression – this makes The Society one of the oldest homeless organisations in London.
Currently the project is based in Tooting and provides high quality temporary accommodation, care and support for up to 10 single homeless men from the age of 30 onwards. Very often the clients will have complex needs, i.e. alcohol abuse, mental health issues, relationship breakdowns etc. Staff aim to guide and support clients in overcoming whatever obstacles are preventing them from living independently, so that they are able to be re-housed back into the community and live successful, sustainable and fulfilling lives. Staff have worked long and hard at fostering a welcoming culture, which many current and ex-residents have positively described as standing out from all other organisations. Employees are supportive, team ethos is high and the project continues to maintain excellent relations with many of its past clients.
The small team at Western Lodge in Tooting are looking for the right person to join as a support/key-worker on a full-time basis (1 year contract, due to funding). The role will involve assisting the Project Manager and Deputy Manager in the day to day running of the project, and include key-working clients.
As a successful candidate you will have:
- previous experience of working in the homeless sector;
- the flexibility to work unsociable hours (including weekends);
- motivation to work as part of a small team, at the same time as showing initiative to thrive under lone-working conditions;
- strong people skills;
- And crucially, must demonstrate a commitment in wanting to support vulnerable people with rebuilding their lives.
